An Example of Gel Polyurethane Molding Procedure

(Gel Armrest for  Armrest)

4. Cure until the gel is solid.

5. De-mold the part.

6. Seal the gel by glue or heat-sealing method around the bottom of the flexible film to the hard insert.

7. Use mechanical fastener such as staples, screws, to attach the hard backing to the arm.

6
1. Use a preformed PVC or polyurethane film and place it in the mold. Films can be formed by vacuum forming etc..  Heat the mold to the recommended temperature if necessary.

2. Use metal or other hard insert and place it near the top of the mold if desired.

3. Pour gel polyurethane from the top.

The applications of gel products vary from highly specialized medical devise to arm rest and cushion parts of home and auto mobile seating products.  This literature exhibits one of a common method of molding polyurethane gel.  In most of the cases the gel needs to be encapsulated in flexible film, synthetic leather, or other flexible materials.

Polyurethane gel typically has a sticky surface, which is not desirable for some applications.  Also, the strength of gel may not withstand the application if it is used without a cover.  A common way of molding polyurethane gel product is to form a flexible film into a cavity so it retains liquid state of polyurethane gel material, pour and let it cure, and seal the top.  For armrests and mouse-pad wrist rests, the parts are molded in the up side down position.
