How to Select Polyurethane Elastomer Formulation

Polyurethane casting elastomers can be made from a wide range of raw materials. This allows us to formulate a very wide range of elastomer materials to serve our customers’ specific needs.

The physical properties of polyurethane elastomer can be very strong to serve in tough conditions; however, it may require more difficult processing parameters or may need more expensive equipment or molds than one wants to invest. Certain types of polyurethane raw materials have more environmental issues than others; this can be a very important concern by certain users.

Polyurethane cast elastomer can be classified into two types: high-performance class, and room-temperature-curable class. High-performance polyurethane elastomers generally have stronger physical properties, and it is processed at an elevated temperature range.  This class of materials is used in more demanding applications such as wheels, pulleys, belts, for automotive and many other industrial applications.

 

In general room-temperature-curable polyurethane elastomers have lower physical properties than high-performance class materials.  But it can be processed at room temperature, thus easier to process.  This material is used in less demanding applications such as gaskets for air filters, potting compound for electronic parts, and in-house tooling such as mold-making resin for concrete.
